Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum to Open at Education City

Celebrating the legacy of modern art’s pioneer, M. F. Husain, Qatar Foundation unveils a cultural landmark that merges art, architecture, and dialogue called Lawh Wa Qalam.

This November, Education City will witness the opening of Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum, an institution dedicated to one of modern art’s most iconic figures. Scheduled to open to the public on 28 November 2025, the museum reflects Qatar Foundation’s commitment to creating spaces where art, heritage, and innovation converge.

Husain, often described as the “Picasso of India,” left behind an extraordinary body of work that continues to shape the trajectory of modern art. The museum seeks not only to preserve this legacy but also to create a space of discovery, dialogue, and inspiration for future generations.

From Vision to Architecture

The design of the museum itself stems from a sketch Husain created — a concept where the building would be more than a container for art; it would be an artwork in itself. Spanning over 3,000 square meters, the museum will house paintings, films, tapestries, sculptures, photography, and personal objects, all presented through immersive storytelling techniques.

“Designed as a space for inspiration and creativity, Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum reflects Qatar Foundation’s dedication to providing spaces for everyone to explore, enjoy, learn from, and be inspired by art and culture,” said Kholoud M. Al-Ali, Executive Director of Community Engagement and Programming at Qatar Foundation.

The Commission and the Collection

Among the highlights of the collection are more than 35 paintings commissioned by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation. Created as part of a series inspired by Arab civilization, these works offer a glimpse into Husain’s deep engagement with the region’s history and culture.

The museum’s galleries will also bring together archival materials and personal memorabilia that trace the influences, philosophies, and memories behind Husain’s distinct visual language.

Seeroo fi al ardh: A Masterpiece Lives On

The museum will feature a dedicated gallery to Seeroo fi al ardh, Husain’s monumental final artwork, conceived and realized at Education City. This installation, which celebrates humanity’s progress through history, will be experienced through a specially curated immersive show, reinforcing the artist’s fascination with storytelling at the intersection of art, technology, and architecture.

More Than a Museum

Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum is not intended as a static repository of art, but as a living space of dialogue. Through learning programs, curated exhibitions, and public engagement, the museum will foster critical thinking and artistic exploration across generations.

Within the wider multidisciplinary environment of Education City, where learning, science, and community engagement meet, this museum adds another dimension: a hub for creativity that connects cultures and inspires collective futures.

Qatar Foundation’s Education City already hosts over 100 works of public art that punctuate its landscape of universities, cultural spaces, and research hubs. With the opening of Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum, the campus strengthens its identity as a global cultural destination where art is not simply displayed, but lived and experienced.

The museum opens to the public on 28 November 2025. Details on visiting hours and programming will be announced in the coming weeks.
