Artists Create Designs for Reusable Art Water Bottles

22 international, regional, and local artists from countries qualified to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ participate in an initiative spearheaded by HE Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, in an effort to spread the message of reducing plastic waste.

As part of activities bringing together culture, art and sport, Qatar Creates presented a collection of 22 unique FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Art Water Bottles, each designed by an artist from a qualifying nation, created by IN-Q Enterprises in partnership with FIFA.

A total of 22 outstanding Qatari and international artists have been commissioned to create designs for the reusable art water bottles, which will serve as official mementos of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ and form part of an important initiative to help reduce plastic waste. The bottles bear designs by artists from nations competing in the tournament: Noor Abuissa, Maryam Al-Homaid,  Shouq Al Mana, Bouthayna Al Muftah, Fatima Al-Sharshani, Mohammed Faraj Al-Suwaidi, Mubarak Al-Thani, Shua’a Ali, Abdulaziz Yousef, and Ali Hassan (Qatar); Manal AlDowayan (Saudi Arabia); Olafur Eliasson (Denmark); Mounir Fatmi (Morocco); Urs Fischer (Switzerland); Liam Gillick (England); Carsten Höller (Belgium); Suki Seokyeong Kang (South Korea); KAWS (United States), Nja Mahdaoui (Tunisia); Ernesto Neto (Brazil); and Jean-Michel Othoniel (France).

The initiative, which is spearheaded by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums (QM), showcases the significance of sports and the arts in Qatar and shows how the two can converge to encourage sustainable practices. The project falls in the domain of IN-Q Enterprises, the commercial arm of Qatar Museums, and comes under the umbrella of Qatar Creates, a year-round national cultural movement that curates, promotes, and celebrates the diversity of cultural activities in Qatar.

Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, said: “Having participated in beach clean-up efforts in Qatar for many years, I have witnessed first-hand the effect of pollution on our natural environment. For that reason, I am pleased that the global artistic community have joined us in advocating for a more sustainable future through the creation of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ reusable water bottles. Whether they become a treasured memento, or are refilled and reused regularly, my hope is that these art water bottles are a small reminder for us all to play our part to help create a greener world.”

Many of the designs take inspiration from the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ tournament. Urs Fischer’s design features an illustration of his iconic Lamp Bear sculpture, which is on view at Hamad International Airport, holding a football, while Abdulaziz Yousef’s bottle design depicts the Doha skyline foregrounded by a football player. In addition to promoting more sustainable practices, the art water bottles will help guests to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ preserve their memories of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. The art water bottles will be available at FIFA Official Merchandise Outlets, Qatar Museums Gift Shops, the IN-Q website, Qatar Duty Free, and Qatar Creates One Pass Kiosks.
