Two New Exhibitions to be Shown at Wusum Gallery
Wusum Gallery will present two new exhibitions, one by Fatima Mohammed titled It’s a Petro World, and the other, Ameni Abida’s Un été à Hammamet, both from 7 August to 5 September 2024.
On 7 August 2024, Wusum Gallery will open two new exhibitions exploring the practices of Doha-based artists Ameni Abida and Fatima Mohammed.
Depicting Tunisian Summer in Doha
Ameni Abida will present Un été à Hammamet, an ode to her native Tunisia, inviting the viewers to experience the essence of a Tunisian summer with its blue skies and azure seas, the scent of jasmine hanging heavy in the air, and the familiar rhythm of family rituals. Depicting intimate scenes of her emotional landscapes, Ameni delves into the themes of longing and belonging.
Ameni’s artistic trajectory is deeply personal, echoing her ongoing exploration of new environments and the emotional landscape they kindle. Abida holds a degree in Culture and Politics from Georgetown University and an MA in Museum and Gallery Practice from University College London. Her upbringing was marked by a series of relocations—each move prompting a reinvention of her environment and, by extension, a do-over for herself.
Fatima and 3naj
Fatima Mohammed’s It’s a Petro World continues the artist’s inquiry into petro-culture and petro-colonialism. The visitors will be guided by her character 3naj (Anaj), a part Arab and part American bald eagle. In this new body of work, Fatima reflects on the social and political dimensions of petroleum politics, examining the underpinnings of an oil crisis as a result of an embargo drawing from her archival research.
Fatima is a contemporary Qatari artist specialising in mixed media, printmaking, and installation. She holds a BA in Painting and Printmaking from VCUarts Qatar. In particular, Fatima’s work focuses on Petro-colonialism and its history in the Gulf region. Throughout her career, she has developed a character named 3naj who observes the transformations that occurred during the course of Petro-colonialism. Fatima’s work has been exhibited locally and internationally in the UK, Russia, the US, and Qatar amongst other places.
Wusum Gallery also announced that they will be representing Fatima Mohammed, who after obtaining her BFA in Painting and Printmaking from VCUarts Qatar in 2016, adopted her alter ego, 3naj. Spanning painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture, Fatima casts 3naj in her work as a strategy to navigate the complexities of personhood and Khaleeji subjecthood.
