Sand Art to Celebrate Football Stars

To celebrate the world’s largest family reunion, the FIFA WORLD CUP 2022 in Qatar, Adidas has created the ‘beach billboard’, a stunning aerial artwork within the 974 beach club, featuring three of the world’s greatest football players; Lionel Messi, Pedri and Achraf Hakimi.

Located beside the two main airports in Doha, the sand art was created by Dubai-based multi-disciplinary artist  Nathaniel Alapide, who uses sand art to create large murals on the shorelines across the Middle East and its deserts.

SCALE spoke to Alapide who has created large-scaled murals on the desert and beaches. He was contacted by Adidas who expressed this idea which the designer converted to art on the sandy shores of the beach near the Stadium 974.

“To practice sand art involves some challenges,” says Alapide, “One of it would be weather conditions as it is not an easy medium to work on specifically if you are doing it outdoors where my work is exposed to the challenging environment.”

Alapide loved the experience of working in Qatar and intends to come back to watch more matches.
