UNStudio has a Biophilic Vision for Seoul
In an ambitious collaboration with Samsung C&T Corporation, UNStudio has unveiled the groundbreaking design for Hannamdong-4 Residences, a project that reshapes the future of urban living in Seoul.
Located in Bogwang-dong, Seoul, the project comprises 2,360 units spread across 114,930 square meters. Rooted in biophilic design principles, this innovative residential concept harmonises urban spaces’ vitality with nature’s tranquility.
Ben van Berkel, founder and principal architect of UNStudio, eloquently captures the project’s essence: “Hannamdong-4 Residences is an incredibly exciting project because it represents a new benchmark for urban living in Seoul. By blending biophilic design, sustainability, and innovation, we are creating a unique residential experience that harmonises the city’s vitality with nature’s tranquility. This project is not just about architecture — it’s about shaping a future where people, community, and the environment thrive together.”
Designed by Nature
At the heart of Hannamdong-4 Residences lies a bold vision to reconnect urban spaces with nature. Situated strategically between Namsan Mountain and the Han River, the development addresses the growing disconnect caused by Seoul’s rapid urbanisation. UNStudio design introduces a high-end lifestyle that integrates architecture, community, and environment into a cohesive and forward-thinking living experience.
The project features a cluster of O-shaped towers fronting the Han River, their patented spiral design a striking visual centerpiece. Complementing these are X-shaped and L-shaped towers along Bogwang-ro, creating a seamless link between the river and the mountain. Drawing on the concept of ‘Biophilic Nexus,’ the design prioritises individual well-being and community connectivity by incorporating elements inspired by the area’s natural and cultural heritage.
Celebrating Local Heritage
The UNStudio design is deeply rooted in South Korea’s rich history. To bridge the gap between past and present, the architecture reflects symbols of local heritage. White pine trees once believed to have vanished from the region but now making a resurgence, and waterlilies, emblematic of the Han River, inspire the facade designs.
For the X-shaped towers, the facade features intricate patterns resembling the texture of white pine trees, with vertical elements mimicking tree trunks and branches. These ‘trunks’ extend into balconies with panoramic views of the Han River, creating a structure that feels alive with natural inspiration. The O-shaped towers showcase a cylindrical design with waterlily-inspired rotating modules arranged around the structure. These petal-like elements form a green spine, creating a dynamic sense of movement and fluidity.
The L-shaped towers act as a subtle backdrop, their rear facade echoing the form of pine trees, while their front reflects the flowing elegance of waterlilies. This cohesive aesthetic underscores the project’s commitment to blending urban sophistication with natural beauty.
Flexibility for the Future
A key innovation of Hannamdong-4 Residences is its adaptable residential layouts. Recognising the dynamic needs of modern families and diverse lifestyles, UNStudio has incorporated flexible spaces that residents can customise to suit their preferences. This approach not only enhances spatial efficiency but also ensures that the homes remain relevant to changing demands, setting a new standard for urban living.
Beyond individual residences, Hannamdong-4 Residences is designed to foster a sense of community. Expansive shared spaces and lush landscaping provide opportunities for interaction and recreation. The development includes a community center offering 360-degree panoramic views, encouraging residents to connect with their surroundings.
‘Highline 365,’ an eco-friendly elevated walkway stretching 365 meters, features jogging tracks and year-round gardens, promoting wellness and providing a peaceful retreat within the bustling city. Additionally, Samsung C&T Corporation plans to establish five parks within the development, spanning a total of 33,000 square meters—a green space five times larger than the Seoul City Hall lawn.
Sustainability at Its Core
UNStudio’s design prioritises environmental sustainability, seamlessly integrating features that minimise ecological impact while enhancing quality of life. Green terraces improve air quality and promote biodiversity, while advanced water management systems, including rainwater harvesting and permeable paving, reduce water wastage.
Energy-efficient technologies, such as solar panels and renewable energy solutions, further lower the development’s carbon footprint. These measures not only protect the area’s distinctive landscape but also contribute to a healthier, more sustainable urban environment.
Hannamdong-4 Residences stands as a testament to what urban living can achieve when architecture, community, and environment align. By reconnecting residents with nature and providing innovative, flexible living spaces, UNStudio and Samsung C&T Corporation are redefining the urban experience in Seoul.
This project is not merely a residential development; it’s a vision for the future where city living coexists harmoniously with the natural world, offering a blueprint for sustainable and community-focused urban planning.
