A Home Beneath a Jackfruit Tree: Embracing Sustainability

Designed with sustainability at its core, “The House beneath a Jackfruit Tree” in Malappuram, Kerala, is a testament to the vision of Uru Consulting, a design firm that blends eco-conscious architecture with a deep respect for nature. This 3,732-square-foot residence not only preserves its surroundings but also integrates them into the very essence of its design, creating a space that fosters warmth, privacy, and connection.

The journey of this home began with a deep connection to the land and the ancient jackfruit tree that stood proudly on the site. Symbolising prosperity, connectiveness, and eternal life in cultures worldwide, the tree became the heart of the design. When Uru Consulting, led by principal consultant Safder Machilakath, visited the plot for the first time, they realized the tree had much to tell. The design of the house unfolded as a tribute to this natural heritage, with the home appearing as an open book, its stories told under the tree’s shade.

Uru Consulting, founded by four school friends turned engineering graduates, has grown into a firm that thrives on integrated design, sustainability, and teamwork. With Safder Machilakath at the helm, and supported by Muhammed Siyad MC, Mohammed Shabeeb P, and Safwan PM, the team is committed to building homes that are in perfect harmony with its environment.

This eco-friendly approach is evident throughout the house, from preserving the jackfruit tree to the use of natural finishes that emphasise raw textures. The choice of neutral tan colours, earthy browns, and demure whites create a tranquil, natural elegance. Teak finishes add warmth, while the cement wall textures highlight the raw beauty of the materials.

According to Safder, one the most challenging aspects of the project was ensuring privacy in a plot surrounded by other houses.

“The solution came in the form of a curtain wall extension from the dining area, finished with jalli work, transforming the space into a serene patio. This thoughtful design not only enhanced privacy but also created an outdoor space where family members could unwind while still feeling connected to nature,” he says.

Natural light played a significant role in the house’s design, with a linear layout that maximises daylight from the East to create a sense of openness and grandeur. The over-projected roofs on the South side prevent excess sunlight, maintaining a comfortable balance of light and shade throughout the day.

The dining and living areas are the largest spaces in the house, designed with double-height ceilings that amplify the feeling of space. Bridge-like structures connect the stairs and bedrooms on the upper levels, fostering interaction and a sense of connection throughout the home. Every level is designed to encourage warm interactions, making it the perfect space for a close-knit family.

Client Zainuddeen C shared his experience working with Uru Consulting, emphasising the team’s ability to listen intently to his vision and translate it into a home that exceeded his expectations. He praised Team Uru for their expertise and support, recognising how they beautifully brought his dream to life while preserving the integrity of the surroundings.

In the end, the house beneath the Jackfruit tree stands as a symbol of sustainability, serenity, and family connection—a place where nature, design, and human warmth coexist in perfect harmony.
