Art Basel Qatar: Global Fair Finds New Home
In a transformative move that speaks volumes about Qatar’s cultural predominance in the region, Art Basel— the world’s most prestigious fair for modern and contemporary art — will make its Middle East debut in Doha in February 2026.
This landmark announcement is the result of a visionary partnership between Art Basel parent company, MCH Group, Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), and QC+, a Doha-based creative collective rooted in cultural commerce. Together, they are set to redefine the contours of art engagement across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The New Cultural Pulse Point
Set against the architectural landscape of M7 Creative Hub and the design-forward streets of Doha Design District in Msheireb, Art Basel Qatar will not merely be a fair—it will be a cultural catalyst. A space where regional voices intersect with global perspectives. A curated moment in time where the MENA region’s artistic talent will finally command the spotlight it richly deserves.
The inaugural edition promises to present a tightly curated selection of leading international and regional galleries, engaging with collectors, curators, and creatives from South Asia, North Africa, and beyond.
More Than a Fair

“As part of His Highness the Amir’s National Vision 2030, Qatar has been transforming itself into a knowledge-based economy, with culture and the creative industries helping to lead the way. We have built a thriving ecosystem of culture and sports, harnessing the capacity of both to break down barriers, create shared experiences, increase understanding and drive positive change,” said Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums (QM).
Unlike traditional art expos, Art Basel Qatar is envisioned as a year-round cultural program—a living, breathing part of Doha’s creative ecosystem. Through public engagement, education initiatives, and dynamic programming, the fair will become part of the city’s cultural DNA, rather than a temporary installation.
This initiative aligns seamlessly with Qatar National Vision 2030, championed by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and spearheaded culturally by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums.
“Culture and the creative industries are helping to lead Qatar into its future,” says HE Sheikha Al Mayassa. “We are pleased to welcome the Art Basel organisation as our partner to elevate our creative industries and offer exceptional new artistic experiences.”
At the heart of this cultural alliance is QSI, whose investments have positioned Qatar as a global nexus of sport, culture, and entertainment.
“Art Basel Qatar is part of the legacy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,” says Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Chairman of QSI. “This partnership reflects our belief that sports and culture share the power to unite people and inspire the world.”
Adding creative firepower to the initiative is QC+, a strategic force behind some of Qatar’s most compelling cultural moments, bringing a deep knowledge of audience engagement, design, and curatorial innovation.
Global Vision, Local Roots
Art Basel’s arrival in Doha marks the fifth international iteration of the fair, joining its sister editions in Basel, Miami Beach, Hong Kong, and Paris. The decision is more than geographic expansion—it is a recognition of the MENA region’s emerging role in global art discourse.

Qatar’s local art scene is abuzz with excitement on this new announcement. Tariq Al Jaidah is a patron of arts whose collection of art is quite prolific.
“We are compelled by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa’s singular vision,” says Noah Horowitz, CEO of Art Basel. “The region’s energy and creativity have reached a tipping point, and we are thrilled to be part of this next chapter.”
The announcement of Art Basel Qatar has sparked tremendous excitement within the local art and collectors’ community, who view it as a landmark moment that will not only elevate Qatar’s position on the global art stage but also foster greater engagement, collaboration, and cultural exchange within the region.”
Tariq Al Jaidah, collector, patron, and arts entrepreneur, welcomes the collaboration and praises HH Sheikha Al Mayassa’s long term vision for the local art scene. He says, “Her Excellency’s objective to integrate the local scene to the international one while highlighting the practices of regional artists is absolutely crucial. Art Basel coming to Doha is a continuum of all the activities we have witnessed since the 2000s underlining Qatar’s ever-increasing role in the arts field globally.”
The Cultural Future is Here
With institutions such as the National Museum of Qatar, 3-2-1 Olympic and Sports Museum, the soon-to-open Lusail Museum, and design incubators like Liwan and M7, Qatar has laid the foundation for a world-class arts ecosystem. Other cultural initiatives that Qatar has initiated include opening of the future Art Mill Museum, development of the future Lusail Museum and the establishment of a permanent Qatar Pavilion in Venice in the Giardini de la Biennale di Venezia. Art Basel Qatar is not an addition to this vision—it is an evolution.
Through this pioneering collaboration, Doha is not just hosting another art fair—it is positioning itself as a cultural capital of the 21st century.
We expect Art Basel Qatar to spark new dialogues, challenge traditional narratives, and elevate Middle Eastern and South Asian art to unprecedented global attention. As the world watches, Doha is setting the stage.
