VCUarts Qatar presents Tasmeem Doha 2024
‘Building a Painting – With Robots, ‘Building Value from Conflict’, ‘Digital Craft. Carbon Fiber Bicycle, ‘The Architecture of the Body’ and ‘ Fologram’ are just a few of the workshops taking place during the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar ‘s (VCUarts Qatar) next edition of Tasmeem Doha titled ‘Under Construction’ from March 2-5, 2024. Tasmeem Doha is an international, biennial art and design conference hosted and organized by VCUarts Qatar since 2004.
Doha seems to be experiencing an art, design and architecture festival with the Doha Design Biennial underway and now with the announcement of Tasmeem Doha 2024 organised by the country’s premium design college that harnesses most of its design talent.
This year, the event will be held at various locations across the city, including but not limited to VCUarts Qatar’s campus in Education City, M7 in Msheireb Downtown Doha and Expo 2023 Doha in Al Bidda park. As with previous editions, the conference consists of workshops, panel discussions and expert talks.
Each edition of Tasmeem Doha highlights a unique and contemporary theme within art and design, exploring novel concepts, methods and applications through masterclasses, discussions and workshops led by pioneers and renowned specialists in various fields.
This year’s theme ‘Under Construction’ calls to mind the critical role that Art and Design plays in inspiring and implementing change, explains the VCUarts Qatar officials.
“To be ‘Under Construction’ is to be active, to be activated, and to lead to positive change. ‘Under Construction’ is also a metaphor for creative research and the application of such research to inspire novel solutions to existing societal concerns.
“These processes of construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction can be addressed at all levels – from the individual to the global community. This is why the latest edition of Tasmeem Doha presents a wide range of perspectives in its programme schedule,” they explained.
As per information received from VCUarts Qatar officials: Public can attend the events that take place on March 2, 2024, from 3 pm to 7 pm, free of charge. Public attendees need to register at https://tasmeem.qatar.vcu.edu/ for the Tasmeem Doha Open Day.
The three-day event features technology gurus, critical theorists and robot makers in addition to practitioners in those core elements of art and design that VCUarts Qatar is currently engaging with.
The workshops have been carefully curated to reflect this range – while workshops such as ‘Building a Painting – With Robots’, ‘Digital Craft. Carbon Fiber Bicycle’ and ‘Fologram’ highlight the use of digital fabrication and virtual reality (VR) in design processes, others such as ‘Building Value from Conflict’ and ‘Reviving Third Places – A Case Study of an Education City Cultural Heritage Site’ place psychological and cultural elements, tangible and intangible, front and center.
‘Under Construction’ takes place during the 25th Anniversary year of Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus in Doha, Qatar. To mark the uniqueness of this year, Tasmeem Doha 2024 also features returning speakers and workshop leaders, Richmond-based VCUarts faculty, and VCUarts Qatar alumni, all of whom led or were involved in previous editions of the conference.
Tasmeem Doha 2024 “Under Construction” takes place with the support of Lead Sponsor Ashgal, Sponsor Sasol, and Community Partners Clay Encounters, Qatar Auto Museum, Earthna, and FROMM.
