The Facade of Light

The Façade of Light – Tokujin Yoshioka

Tokujin Yoshioka has designed the architectural facade for Galaxy Harajuku in Japan named the Media Surface as a transparent layer of light floating in the air using more than 1000 smart phones.

According to Tokujin Yoshioka, the facade is composed of light to instil a sense of future and the transparent layer of light floating in the air emerges as a memory for the future. Projected by more than 1000 smartphones, the image illuminates the new vision orchestrated by Galaxy’s technology. The only architectural element on this monolithic structure are the Galaxy phones. The real phones are suspended face down on the base of a series of shelves, the floating images that can be seen on the facade are the reflection of light created by a semi-transparent mirror.
