Self-Sustaining Fold Architecture Farmhouse by Earthscape Studio
Amidst mountains and lush groves, this farmhouse project titled Into the Wild by Earthscape Studio seamlessly blends architecture with nature. Situated on a 12-acre plain, the site’s simplicity inspired a design that prioritises 25% construction and 75% nature. The result is a self-sustaining structure that embraces sustainability beyond just greenery, integrating innovative techniques to reduce environmental impact.
Earthscape Studio is a design studio dedicated to reimagining architecture through a deep connection with nature. Known for their expertise in earthen construction and sustainable building techniques, the firm has been at the forefront of ecological architecture, integrating traditional knowledge with contemporary design. Their philosophy revolves around minimal intervention and maximum harmony with the environment, creating spaces that are both functional and immersive.
This farmhouse is a testament to the commitment of Earthscape Studio led by Petchimuthu Kennedy’s commitment to crafting innovative, low-impact living spaces that seamlessly blend with their surroundings.
Design Philosophy and Innovation
Sustainability is more than just planting trees; it is about how a building interacts with its surroundings. In this house Petchimuthu’s approach focuses on minimising carbon emissions through innovative construction techniques.
The result is a self-sustaining structure that seamlessly folds and flows into its environment, embodying a concept termed ‘fold architecture.’
This 4½-inch shell structure bends and flows with a series of arches, layered with traditional thappi plaster on the exterior and mud plaster on the interior. It eliminates the need for columns and beams, relying instead on a fluidic form that integrates nature and structure.
“Mud, an essential element of earthen architecture, is not just a material palette but a craft, brought to life by skilled artisans using traditional lime plasters from India. The smooth transition of lime plaster extends to the floors and built-in furniture, creating a luxurious yet ecologically mindful living space,” says Petchimuthu Kennedy, lead architect of Earthscape Studio.
Climate-Responsive Architecture
The farmhouse’s design ingeniously mitigates high humidity and heat. The 7½-ft tall landscape embraces the structure with lush grass, acting as an insulating layer that helps regulate indoor temperatures.
“This green cover reduces heat gain, while well-placed windows at lower levels usher in cool air from the sylvan surroundings. Vent openings protrude at strategic points, allowing hot air to escape and fosters a natural stack effect. Sunlight filters through these vents, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow throughout the space,” explain Earthscape Studio.
Designed as a journey through flowing spaces, this 2BHK farmhouse evokes a sense of curiosity through its circular transitions.
The structure’s cavesque folds enhance the feeling of being immersed in nature. The central courtyard, flanked by varying openings, channels natural light and ventilation, blurring the boundaries between indoor and semi-outdoor spaces.
A linear bar opening frames a breathtaking view of towering coconut and palm trees, amplifying the home’s seamless dialogue with its surroundings.
Built-In Elegance and Sustainable Luxury
Interiors in this project go beyond mere decoration — they are intrinsic to the architecture.
“All furniture is custom-built in harmony with the space, ensuring cohesion between form and function. Beds, seating, bar counters, and pantries emerge organically from the structure, their arise finishes enhancing the ambiance of luxury. The bathrooms, finished in arise textures, double as natural waterproofing solutions,” explains Petchimuthu.
Sustainability extends to every detail—wood for doors, benches, and cabinets is sourced from reclaimed materials, while stone elements such as door handles and benches are locally carved on-site.
From the outside, the farmhouse appears as a green, living entity, seamlessly blending into its surroundings. Inside, it offers a sanctuary that is both intimate and expansive.
Earthscape Studio with its self-sustaining approach, thoughtful climate-responsive design, and handcrafted interiors create a home that is not only architecturally innovative but also a testament to the beauty of conscious living.
